Authorised by Congress under Public Law 106-435 the U.S. Mint issued a commemorative coin to support the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each coin was authorised to help support the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games.

The silver dollar obverse is the design of US Mint sculptor/engraver John Mercanti.  It features the Crystal Emblem of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, Olympic Rings, and the Games' secondary identity mark entitled: "Rhythm of the Land."  The designer of the reverse is US Mint sculptor/engraver Donna Weaver and portrays Salt Lake City skyline with the Rocky Mountains in the background.

Minted by the US Mint, this coin comes encapsulated and presented in a deep blue velvet case and is protected by the original US Mint packaging with certificate of authenticity.
