The United States Mint certifies that this coin is a genuine 1996 Smithsonian Institution 150th Anniversary Commemorative Proof Silver Dollar, struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on January 10, 1996, as Public Law 104-96. This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, United States Mint to commemorate the Sesquicentennial Anniversay of the founding of the Smithsonian Institution.

The obverse design of the 1996 Smithsonian Institution features the Smithsonian Castle flanked by laurel leaves.

The reverse design features an allegorical figure with the torch of knowledge, based on the Smithsonian's gold Langley Medal.
