2000 $5 SILVER PROOF - THE SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPIC COIN COLLECTION

FESTIVAL OF THE DREAMING

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Coin Program is a joint venture between the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint to commemorate the Olympic Games in Sydney in the Year 2000.  The sixteen coins in the Silver Coin Series feature two distinct themes: Australia’s cultural diversity and the environmental richness of the Australian Continent.

Each Silver coin carries the Sydney 2000 signature with rings in colour and is edge-lettered with the words ‘Games of XXVII Olympiad’.

The image of the Reverse of this coin is a collaborative work by Australian Aboriginal athlete and artist, Nova Peris-Kneebone and master coin designer, Stuart Devlin, appointed goldsmith and jeweller to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1982.

The figures in the centre of the design depict two people.  The circle around them represents their dreams, the smaller dots their family and friends, and the waves, the obstacles they must overcome.  The stars symbolise the notion that the sky is the limit to accomplishment if dreams are backed by dedication.

Ms Peris-Kneebone won an Olympic Gold medal in Atlanta in 1996 as a member of Australia’s Women’s Hockey Team.

The coin is encapsulated and a rich green colour has been chosen for the interior and the exterior of the presentation case.

The coin is accompanied by a descriptive booklet that includes a Certificate of Authenticity and is protected by a beauty box.
