PRESERVING THE MELODY OF A PEOPLE'S PAST

As a multi-cultural nation with ancient societies at its core, Canada is home to a wealth of soul-nourishing festivals that celebrate the past and foster a new vision for the future.  Old traditions from a multitude of nations are combined with modern ideas to create new customs that enrich this nation as a whole.  Canada's festivals amaze, inspire, and delight its residents as well as those who visit.

When Newfoundland's first immigrants arrived from Europe, they brought with them the songs and traditions of their homelands. Soon, the music of Ireland, Scotland, England and France were brought together in a unique style as the first Newfoundlanders chronicled their lives in song.

Characterised by the distintive sound of the fiddle, accordian, mandalin, tin whistle and bodhran, Newfoundland's musical and artistic style has survived for generations.  Today, it is stronger than ever and can be experienced in all its diversity of the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival.
