THE KEY TO A CONTINENT

FORTRESS OF LOUISBOURG NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE OF CANADA (1713-1768)

When it was built in 1713, the fortress on this coin was one of the largest buildings in North America. Founded by France, Louisburg quickly became the third busiest seaport on the continent, surpassed only by Boston and Philadelphia.

In 1745, it was captured by New Englanders and a British naval squadron, but was returned under treaty in 1749. Nine years later, the British seized Louisburg once again. By then, a much stronger military base was taking shape in Halifax so the British destroyed the town before withdrawing in 1768. Today, the Fortress of Louisburg is a National Historic Site and stands as a living memorial to the 18th-century rivalry for supremacy.

Designed by Royal Canadian Mint engraver Marcos Hallam, it features the Dauphin Gate and a drummer that would be seen during re-enactments.  Along the circumference of the coin a sun dial alluding to the one that was found during an archaeological dig at the site.

The coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon display case with an insert, which houses the coin and is protected by a black beauty box.
