Designed by Edwina Ellis, the new £1 coin for 2004 pays homage to Scotland and features one of Scotland's most famous landmarks, the magnificient Forth Rail Bridge.

The bridge was the invention of John Fowler and Benjamin Baker and is a cantilever design composed of three portions.  A marvel of Victoruia engineering, the bridge was the biggest manmade construction of its time.  Its nearly exclusive use of steel, combined with its latticework appearance makes it oddly reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower.
