Following the regional designs which appeared on £1 coins from 1984 to 1987, the 1988 £1 coin features a new reverse design representing the United Kingdom as a whole.

To commemorate this new issue the Royal Mint struck a maximum of 15,000 silver Proof Piedfort £1 coins for worlwide distribution. Piedfort coins are struck on thicker than normal blanks.  As their name suggests the are closely associated with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently used by the King as presentation pieces.

The new design of the 1988 £1 coin by the Deputy Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint, Derek Gorringe, depicts the Royal Arms of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II surmounted by the Crown of St Edward.  The Royal Arms are the heraldic representation of the United Kingdom, and they achieved their present form with the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837.

The obverse features Raphael Maklouf's elegant portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  The portrait is encircled by the Royal Style and Titles in Laine: "Elizabeth II, By The Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith".
