For 1997, in the first year of its issue, the Royal Mint has struck a piedfort version of the new circulating £2 coin in sterling (.925 silver).

Piedfort coins, which specially struck on the thicker than normal blanks, have close associations with France, where, from the twelfth century they were isssued by the King as presentation pieces.

A very desirable silver proof PIEDFORT £2. The Bi-metalic coin is Silver with the outer circle being coated in gold plate. The reverse pattern represents four ages from in concentric circles, from the Iron age; 18th century; to the industrial development and then the silicon chip and internet age

The edge inscription reads: STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS. Only 10,000 PIEDFORT coins were issued for worldwide distribution.

Encapsulated and housed in the original Royal Mint box with the Certificate of Authenticity it is a must for any FIRST ISSUE collectors.
