A new fifty pence was introduced in 1997 and to mark the change the Royal Mint has issued a superb Silver Proof Piedfort version.

Smaller and lighter than its predecessor the new coin will retain the shape of an equilateral curve heptagon which, at its introduction in 1969 made the fifty pence the world's first seven-sided coin.  It continues to boast on its reverse the historic figure of Britannia, an elegant seated figure prepared by Christopher Ironside at the time of decimalisation.

The obverse continues to feature the elegant portrait of Her Majesty the Queen by Raphael Maklouf.

A Silver Proof PIEDFORT issue 50p piece,  minted in 1997 to commemorate the changing from the large 50p piece to the smaller 50p.  1997 was the only year of issue for this 50p.

The coin is encapsulated and housed in the original Royal Mint box with the Certificate of Authenticity.

This splendid new fifty-pence coin weighs 16.00 grammes and measures 27.30mm in diameter.  It has been struck to the highest Proof quality in sterling .925 silver.
