CELEBRATING THE 2002 COMMONWEALTH GAMES - COOK ISLANDS $1 SILVER PROOF

In 2002, the city of Manchester played host to the world's largest family of nations for the XVII Commonwealth Games.  In the biggest competition in its seventy-two-year history, over 5,000 athletes from seventy-two nations participated from 25th July to 4th August 2002.  The Commonwealth Games therefore represent the union of different races, creeds and cultures from all around the world, united in harmony through sport.  It is fitting then that, to honour this great sporting occasion, the Cook Islands has chosen to issue this splendid commemorative coin.

The coin has been struck in sterling .925 silver to frosted proof quality.  The reverse has been designed by Mary Milner Dickens and shows three medals, representing the gold, silver and bronze medals worn by the successful sportsmen, together with competitors, officials and appreciative crowds.  The Cook Island's flag and the date 2002 feature in the design to celebrate the country's participation in the games.

Raphael Maklouf's elegant portrait of Her Majesty the Queen is depicted on the obverse.  The date on the obverse, however, is 2001, representing the year of issue.
