1994 THREE-COIN SILVER PROOF COLLECTION

COMMEMORATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALLIED INVASION OF EUROPE

To mark the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings, two countries have joined forces with the United Kingdom to form a superb three-coin silver collection containing from France a one franc piece, from the United States of America a one dollar coin and from the United Kingdom a fifty pence coin.

Designs and Specifications

French One Franc - the obverse, by Claude Lesot, illustrates a powerful scene from the Normandy landings as Allied troops, supported by air and sea forces, negoiate the hazardous beaches.  The reverse by Jean Pierre Gendis shows the flags of France, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States flying proudly behind the head of the famous Statue of Liberty.  Weight - 26.73gms; Diameter - 37.00mm; Alloy - .900 fine silver.

United States of America One Dollar - The United States pays tribute to that momentous day with designs by US Mint sculptor/engraver Thomas D Rogers Snr.  The obverse depicts the perilous advance of an American soldier across a Normandy beach with the inscription "In Gold We Trust" and "Liberty", while the reverse carries the insignia of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, together with a quotation from General Eisenhower's D-Day message to his troops.  Weight - 26.73gms; Diameter - 38.00mm; Alloy - .900 fine silver.

United Kingdom Fifty Pence - The Allied invasion force filling the sea and sky is depicted on the reverse of the commemorative fifty pence coin.  The dynamic design was created by John Mills, and was inspired by his boyhood recollection of that historic day when, looking up at the sky and seeing it filled with the distinctively marked planes of the Allied, he realised that the invasion of France was underway.  Raphael Maklouf's acclaimed portrait of Her Majesty the Queen appears on the obverse.  Weight - 13.50gms; Diameter - 38.00mm; Alloy - Sterling (.925) Silver.

Each coin in this collection is struck to the finest Proof quality and is subject to the strict minting limits set in its country of origin. However, only 10,000 of these magificinet collections will be made available for worldwide distribution.

The coins are housed in their original case with certificates of authenticity/information booklet as issued by the Royal Mint, Monnaie De Paris and the United States Mint.
