Complete Set of Four Britannia Silver Coins
Long a symbol of national pride, Britannia first appeared on coins in Roman times. For more than 300 years, she has had a place on high value coins of the realm. It was fitting, then, that this symbol of British pride was chosen to adorn the new Gold Britannia coins introduced in 1987, the first change to the UK’s gold coinage for 150 years. Now, to mark the 25th anniversary year of this significant issue, this masterful image once again graces the 2012 Britannia coins.
Designed by the internationally renowned artist Philip Nathan, it won ‘Coin of the Year’ in 1987. In a triumph of coin design, the goddess is depicted standing, rather sitting. She holds a trident in one outstretched hand as she rests her left hand on her shield while grasping a sprig of olive.
The obverse of each one features the acclaimed effigy of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Each coin is bordered by a distinctive crenellated edge only used on Britannia coins.
These four coins are struck to Proof quality in .958 Britannia silver. Containing 95.8% silver, Britannia silver is purer than sterling silver, and a standard of quality introduced during the recoinage of William III in 1696.
This exquisite set brings together each of the four Britannia coins – the £2, £1, 50p and 20p – in a limited edition presentation. This remarkable set of coins comes in a luxury presentation case with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. Remarkable for their beauty as well as their historic significance, these four coins will be treasured for years to come.
