The obverse shows the effigy of Her Majesty the Queen drawn by the late James Berry, with the words "Elizabeth II Queen of New Zealand", separated from the date by two florets. The reverse design, prepared by the Royal Mint, features a New Zealand bird, the Takahe, facing left with the words "one dollar" around the top of the coin.

Edge has 5 equally spaced 6.350mm segments separated by graining. This coin shows the bark "Endeavour" sailing down the west coast of the North island of New Zealand.
