The black stilt, endemic to New Zealand is currently the world's rarest wading bird.  The design based on a painting by Piers Hayman shows an adult black stilt and chick, and a second adult bird, standing in water in typical feeding attitude.

Fifty Cents (50c) - Weight - 13.608gs - Diameter 31.750mm - Cupro-Nickel

Edge has 5 equally spaced 6.350mm segments separated by graining.  Captain James Cook bark "Endeavour" sailing south, with Mount Egmont in the distance below the figure "50".

Twenty Cents (20c) - Weight - 11.31gms - Diameter 28.575mm - Cupro-Nickel (grained edge)

The obverse design on all coins in this set shows the Arnold Machine effigy of Her Majesty The Queen with the inscription "Elizabeth II New Zealand 1985" around the periphery
