The silver R2 crown size coin was first issued in 1997 as a collectors' coin and featured South Africa's "Marine Life" until 2002.  In 2003 a new theme, South Africa's "Birds of Prey" was introduced.  The"African Eagles" were the first birds of prey to be featured, followed in 2004 by the "African Owls" and the "African Vultures" in 2005.

In South Africa conservation efforts and educational campaigns have resulted in a high degree of awareness and understanding of vultures and a concerted effort to make the human environment more "vulture friendly".

In support of these conservation efforts, the South African Mint has chosen this magnificent bird to feature on the reverse of the legal tender R2 (crown) silver coin.  On the obverse of the coin the South African coat of arms, together with the date "2005" and the words "South Africa" written in all the official languages are depicted.
