This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.
Kite flying in China has been recorded since the 4th century BC - around 2,000 years before the Europeans first discovered what they called "flying sails". For the Chinese, kite flying was not only a leisure activity, for their armies employed kites as an early form of long distance communication. By standing on top of hills or mountains, they were able to transmit visible messages across vast distances by flying different kites with pre-determind shapes and colours carrying different meanings.
