This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.

The umbrella was invented in China towards the end of the 4th Century BC.  An older form of the umbrella made of silk had already been in use for some centuries, as protection against rain above the army's chariots and carriages.  In contrast, the umbrellas of the Wei dynasty were made of firm oil paper.  By the 14th century, umbrellas of both materials had become very popular and widespread.  However, in 1368 a decree was issued stating that silk umbrellas were reserved exclusively for use by the Royal Family - to ensure that the common people were not to rise above "their station".
