This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.

Historians believe the stirrup was first invented by the skilled horseman of the East.  Early pictures show simple leather loops which held the feet of Chinese and Mongol warriors.  Stirrups gave the rider a firmer seat, allowing the warrior in battle to withstand the shock of an enemy lance or mace and deliver a harder blow himself.  A similar principle applies in the ancient game of Polo, pictured on The Stirrup coin.  A game played by two teams of four players on horseback, Polo was devised by ancient warriors to sharpen their battle skills and horsemanship.
