This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.
This early scientific instrument was first documented in the works of Hanfucius (280 B.C.) and Wang Ch'ung (27-97 A.D.). Prior to this, it is thought that the ancient compass was used for magical and not navigational purposes. This legal tender Chinese coin illustrates one of the very first compasses - a ladle full of water placed on a solid platform - into which a magnectic needle would have been placed. The warriors in the background can be seen after using the compass, pointing north following the direction of the needle.
