Although the modern seismograph uses the Richter scale to measure the magnitude of an earthquake, the early Chinese device was probably used as an early warning device, detecting the smaller initial tremors. The first seismograph is attributed to Change Heng, Royal Astronomer during the Han Dynasty. China has a long history of devastating earthquakes, perhaps the most horrific of which occured in 1556 in Shenshi Province when some 830,000 people are thought to have been killed.
