This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.
Not only did the Chinese invent the rudder (first century B.C.), but they are also credited with the development of masts and sails. Long before the likes of Columbus and Marco Polo, the Chinese sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, discovered Australia and traded with American natives, indeed it was not until around 1180 A.D. that western ships even began using rudders. One of the greatest advantages of the Chinese sails was to replace the basic square sail with the fore and aft rig which allowed ancient mariners to sail into the wind.
