The handover from London to Rio took place at the Closing Ceremony of the Olympic Games on 12th August 2012. In keeping with the Olympic tradition and following the March of the Athletes, three national flags will be hoisted: the flag of Greece to honour the birthplace of the Olympic Games; the flag of the Host Nation, the UK; and the flag of the country hosting the next Summer Olympic Games, Brazil.
The Mayor of London will join the President of the IOC on the rostrum to return the Olympic Flag he has held over the previous four years and the IOC President will present it to the Mayor of the next Host City, Rio.
