THE ROYAL PORTRAIT COLLECTIONS

The Queen's portrait on the coinage of the United Kingdom is one of the most visible and familiar symbols of the nation.  How important, then, that the Royal Effigy be dignified, regal and above all instantly recognisable, representing as it does not only the monarch it portrays but the coin's country of origin and an era in its history.  All this is fulfilled in the four effigies that have appeared on the circulating coins of the Queen's reign and in 1998, the year the new likeness by Ian Rank-Broadley makes its appearance, all four have been brought together in the Crown Portrait Collection.

1965 The Churchill Crown - following the dealth of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965 a special crown piece was struck in his memory. Denomination - Five Shillings.

1972 Silver Wedding Crown - the reverse of the 1972 crown, like its obverse, was designed by Arnold Machin.  Celebrating the silver wedding anniversary of the Queen and Prince Philip it comprises the initials E and P royally crowned and intertwined with  decorative sprays of foilage.  Denomination - Twenty-Five Pence.

1990 Ninetieth Brithday Crown - in 1990 a crown was issued to celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Its special reverse features her initial letter E, in duplicate and interlaced, as a cypher ensigned by the Royal Crown.  Denomination - Five Pounds.

1998 Fiftieth Birthday Crown - the reverse of the 1998 crown has been created by the renowned portrait painter Michael Noakes and celebrates the 50th birthday of the Prince Wales while at the same time paying tribute to the work of The Prince's Trust.  Denomination - Five Pounds.
