On 4th May 2017, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh would be retiring from public duty. This marks an incredible 70 years of service to the Queen, the United Kingdom, British Isles and the Commonwealth.
And to honour this achievement, The Royal Mint announced the release of a brand new UK coin that pays tribute to Prince Philip and his 70 years of service.
The coin features a portrait of The Duke of Edinburgh by highly respected designer Humphrey Paget (1893-1974). Today, Paget is recognised as one of the finest and most prolific coin designers of the 20th century. This portrait of Prince Philip was one of his last significant commissions.
