In the post-Dunkirk summer of 1940 Britain became the objective of a hastily-planned German invasion.  Code-named "Operation Sealion", this plan required Geman control of the air above the English Channel.  From early July the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) attacked shipping and coastal towns to lure the RAF into combat over the sea.
