The circus as we know it dates back to the 1760's, the brainchild of English cavalryman, Philip Astley, who, taken by the idea of performing daredevil riding exhibitions, roped off a filed near London, and set about it. Astley later introduced novelty acts such as clowns, jugglers and tightrope walkers, the modern circus was born.
