The “Welcome to London 2012” Coin First Day Cover
Olympic and Paralympic Games

On 27th July 2012, with the lighting of the magnificent Olympic Flame, London plays host to the Olympic Games for the third time – the only city to have hosted the Games as many times.

The cover features a stunning UK £5 coin designed by Saiman Miah depicting the London skyline surrounded by 13 Olympic sports pictograms including Rhythmic Gymnastics, Taekwondo, Synchronised Swimming, Canoe Slalom, Track Cycling, Sailing, Weightlifting, Athletics, Archery, Equestrian, Hockey and Badminton.  It is also the first coin to feature the Union Flag London 2012 emblem.  The obverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley.

This First Day Cover also features the Royal Mail “Welcome to the London 2012 Olympic Games’ Miniature Sheet.  Photographs taken by Andy Hooper showcase a selection of the Olympic sports such as Diving, Fencing, Athletics and Cycling, are merged with London landmarks photographed by Paul Grundy to create four new stamps.

The first £1.28 stamp shows the chimney of the former power station that houses the Tate Modern mirroring the sport Diving.  The second of the £1.28 values portray Cycling, with the London Eye forming the front wheel of an Olympic racing bike.  The top right 1st Class stamp represents Fencing, with Tower Bridge completing the Fencer’s sword.  Finally, the remaining 1st Class stamp of the issue shows athletes running on a track that merges into the Olympic Stadium.  Your Cover has been postmarked on 27th July 2012, the First Day of the Issue which coincides with the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.
