The Dragon has been recognised as the emblem of Wales for well over a thousand years and it is therefore entirely appropriate that it should feature on the new Welsh £1 coin.  The dragon, passant with wings elevated just as it appears on the badge and flag of Wales, has been modelled by Norman Sillman from a drawing by the College of Arms.

The obverse bears the portrait of the Queen by Raphael Maklouf and the edge carries the inscription PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD, a phrase taken from the Welsh national athem and meaning "True am I to my country".

The familiar red 25p stamp also bears the Welsh dragon along with the famous portrait of the Queen by Arnold Machin.  The stamp has been cancelled with the Cardiff postmark for 12 May 1995.
