BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED £2 COIN - 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE END OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR
1945 - IN PEACE GOODWILL - 1995
PHILATELIC NUMISMATIC COVER
The reverse of the Second World War £2 coin has been designed by John Mills who himself has vivid recollections of the war. A commemorative sculpture of his, situated to the south of St. Paul's, acknowledges the debt owed to the fire-fighters who died during the Blitz. And it was because of this sculpture that, in competition with other artists, he was specially invited to submit designs for the 1995 Second World War £2.
The coin beautifully depicts mankind's desire for a peaceful world.
The Royal Mail celebrates with 19p and 25p commemorative stamps featuring scenes of 1945 symbolising the return of peace and freedom.
The PNC cover is jointly issued by the Royal Mail and the Royal Mint.
