NHS 1948 - 1998

It was the vision of the Health Minister and MP for Ebbw Vale, Aneurin Bevan, that led to the birth, on 5th July 1948, of the National Health Service.  For the time, anywhere in the world, the state provided for its citizens a comprehensive range of medical care free of charge.  Before its inception illness meant paying for almost every hospital stay and doctor's visit.

On its fiftieth anniversary the NHS can proudly claim to have transformed the overall healthcare of the nation. Special stamps from the Royal Mail and a commemorative coin from the Royal Mint remind us that this unique service touches everyone.
