The 33rd Notting Hill Carnival took to the streets in 1998.  Started by the area's Caribbean immigrants as a means of bringing together a community facing poor social conditions, the first Carnival embodied memories of the great Trinidadian street festivals back home.  Now, every year, on the last weekend in August, the streets of London's Notting Hill come alive with up to two million people enjoying the sights, sounds and tastes of one of the world's largest celebrations of multi-cultural diversity.

The Carnival is Europe's largest arts festival.  So it is fitting that Royal Mail's celebration of its vibrancy is a contribution to the Europa subject of National Festivals - a Europe-wide Philatelic theme.  It is equally fitting that the Royal Mint coin features the 12 stars of the European Union, a coin designed to celebrate the UK's 25th anniversary of joining the Common Market and its EU Presidency.
