ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINES - 1901-2001 PHILATELIC MEDALLIC COVER
After 100 years the submarine's whale shape looks much the same but technology has transformed the original 65-foot petrol-engined Holland of 1901 into today's 450-foot nuclear-powered leviathan. Even steam submarines were tested until diesel and electric power finally provided the optimum combination of ranges and submerged capability.
In 1963 the first all-British nuclear submarine, HMS Valiant, gave the service's motto "We come unseen" even more deadly meaning. Today the Royal Navy Vanguard Class SSBNs (nuclear-powered submarine carrying ballistic missiles) patrol the world's oceans. Armed with Trident missiles they can stay submerged - and undetected - for months at a time.
