FAREWELL TO CLASSIC COINAGE COMMEMORATIVE COIN COVER
BRITISH HISTORY THROUGH COINS AND STAMPS

2008 saw the biggest change in British Coinage since decimalisation in 1971 as we bid a farewell to the design of the classic UK legal tender coins as we know them.  Decimalisation brought a huge change to the UK's coinage and since, a generation has grown up with the decimal currency and current reverse designs, which make up the emblems of Britain recognised today.

Christopher Ironside's winning designs for the 50p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p are those that we say goodbye to, 42 years after they were originally designed.  William Gardiner was responsible for the reverse of the 20p and Eric Sewell of the Royal Mint designed the original Royal Arms with lion and unicorn supporters on the reverse of the pound coin.

This commemorative cover, celebrates the last of the classic coinage presenting the coins in cupro-nickel.  The last classic coins have now been struck and this cover offers you the chance to own the 1p through to the 50p in one colection, becoming a memento for such a historic occasion.

The coins are complemented with a Royal Mail 1st class definitive postmarked on the 15th February 2008, celebrating the date of the original decimalisation in 1971 which changed UK history forever.
