BATTERSEA DOGS & CATS HOME 1860-2010

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home was established in 1860 by the Victorian animal welfare campaigner Mary Tealby; by the 1890's it was taking in around 40,000 stray dogs every year.  There are far fewer lost or abandoned dogs today, but the Home's founding vision remains the same: to never turn away a dog or a cat in need of help, and to care for them until a new home can be found.

This commemorative cover, produced by the Royal Mint, celebrates the 150th Anniversary of the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.  The medal is complemented with ten first class "dog and cat" design stamps, postmarked Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, 1860-2010, London SW8.
