This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.
Around 3,000 B.C. Chinese metal workers discovered how to make bronze through mixing together molten copper and tin. The benefits of the new alloy were numerous. Bronze was far easier to cast than pure copper and blacksmiths found they were able to make better cutting tools that both lasted longer and were more effective than existing implements. On an artistic level, Chinese sculptors found bronze a particularly effective medium to work with. The coin shows a Chinese bronze vase as well as Chinese workers casting and working with molten bronze.
