In 2017 The Royal Mint celebrated the 200th anniversary of the modern gold Sovereign by authorising a special reverse design, which was inspired by the design that featured on the first of these coins, issued in 1817.

The Gold Proof Piedfort Sovereign has the Fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the Obverse and the brand new St George and Dragon design on the Reverse, which was especially commissioned for the 200th Anniversary of the original design by Benedetto Pistrucci used on the first 'modern' sovereign in 1817.

This stunning double thickness coin is encapsulated to keep it’s proof lustre, and housed in a new style walnut finish case.  Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and outer box.
