In 1949, Ireland became a republic outside the Commonwealth, then, in 1973, joined the EEC.  Ireland adopted the Euro on 1st January 1999.  This Republic of Ireland 1 Pound note represents the last of this denomination.  It features Queen Medb, with olden writings.  The watermark is of Lady Hazel Lavery, wife of Sir John Lavery, the Irish painter.  The Irish Pound ceased to exist as a currency on 1st January 2002.
