2000 $5 SILVER PROOF - THE SYDNEY 2000 OLYMPIC COIN COLLECTION

FLORA AND FAUNA

The Sydney 2000 Olympic Coin Program is a joint venture between the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint to commemorate the Olympic Games in Sydney in the Year 2000.  The sixteen coins in the Silver Coin Series feature two distinct themes: Australia’s cultural diversity and the environmental richness of the Australian Continent.

Each Silver coin carries the Sydney 2000 signature with rings in colour and is edge-lettered with the words ‘Games of XXVII Olympiad’.

The Kangaroo is among the most widely recognised symbols of Australia.  In this design by Stuart Devlin, the animal is depicted in typical pose, carrying a baby or ‘joey’ in her pouch.  The kangaroos are surrounded by native Australian Xanthorrhoea plants, commonly known as Grasstrees or by their Aboriginal name, ‘Balga’ trees.

The coin is encapsulated and a rich green colour has been chosen for the interior and the exterior of the presentation case.

The coin is accompanied by a descriptive booklet that includes a Certificate of Authenticity and is protected by a beauty box.
