VICTORIA 150 YEARS (1835-1985) - STATE SERIES

On 19th November 1834, Edward Henty established a camp at Portland Bay, at that time still an outpost of the State of New South Wales.  Less than a year later, on the 28th August 1835, John Fawkner and a group of European settlers established another camp by the Yarra River at a site close to the present day Spencer Street.

From these humble origins, the State of Victoria, firstly recognised legally in 1851, has grown to a population of nearly four million people and fully reflects the motto ‘Peace and Prosperity’ shown on the State of Victoria Armorial Ensign first granted in 1910.  The Armorial bearings of the State of Victoria were redesigned and approved by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1973.

The 1985 $10 coin is the first of a series which will feature the Coat of Arms of the individual State and Territories of the Commonwealth of Australia.  The series is to be known as the $10 State Series and will be issued on a regular basis.  This year, 1985 marks the sesquicentenary of the State of Victoria.  The 1985 coin reflects this event by featuring the official Victorian Coat of Arms.

The coin is housed in a dark blue leatherette presentation case and box shipper, accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
