On 21st April 1983, the new one pound coin was issued as a circulating piece.

To commemorate this important and historic occasion in the minting of United Kingdom coinage, the Royal Mint issued the one pound coin in silver proof.

The reverse of the coin, designed by Eric Sewell, formerly Chief engraver of the Royal Mint, shows a representation of the Royal Arms which has a fascinating history reflecting one of the oldest continuing Royal Lines in Christendom.

The obverse features the famous portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Arnold Machin.
