On 22nd June 1983, a Royal Proclamation was signed by Her Majesty The Queen authorising four new design variants for the reverse of the one pound coin.

This coin, the second in the series, features the Nationa Emblem of Wales - the Leek.  The first coin, representing Scotland, was issued in 1984, while in 1986 and 1987 one pound coins were issued bearing designs for Northern Ireland and England.

To commemorate this significant occasion in the history of the United Kingdrom coinage, the Royal Mint issued a silver proof one pound coin.

The reverse of the Welsh one pound coin, designed by silversmith Leslie Durbin, is described in the Proclamation as a "Leek eradicated enfiling a representation of Our Royal Diadem". The Welsh inscription PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD, (True am I to my Country") appears on the edge of the coin.

The obverse carries the new effigy of Her Majesty The Queen by the sculptor Raphael Maklouf.
