The Battle of Trafalgar, so called because Cape Trafalgar was the nearest point of land, took place on 21st October 1805.  It was one of the most decisive battles ever fought at sea and the British victory ended many years of sea battles with France and Spain, destroying France as a maritime power and winning back British naval supremacy. The British fleet was commanded by Lord Nelson and the allied French and Spanish fleet was led by the French Admiral Villeneuve.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, the Royal Mint issued a commemorative crown.  Designed by Clive Duncan, the reverse shows the Victory, Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, in full sail.

The obverse carries Ian Rank-Broadley's elegant portrait of the Queen.
