The giant panda, Ailuropoda melanoleuca, is a bearlike animal that has dense white fur with black markings on its ears, limbs, shoulders and around its eyes.  It can grow up to four and a half feet long and can weigh up to three hundred pounds.  The panda is the symbol of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (formerly the World Wildlife Fund) and is the focus of urgent conservation efforts.
