First issue of the Silver Zambian Elephant coin.

The 1999 1oz Silver Zambian Elephant coin was the first of five in the African Elephant Series struck for the nation of Zambia, backed by the Bank of Zambia. Following the release of the 2003 coin, the Bavarian State Mint changed the nation of issue from Zambia to Somalia.

The reverse design of the 1999 1oz Silver Zambian Elephant coin features a mature elephant watching over a young calf as it drinks from the waters of the African savanna. Engravings read “African Wildlife” above and “Elephant” below, along with the weight, purity and metal content.

The obverse design of the 1999 1oz Silver Zambian Elephant feature the national crest of Zambia. Engravings - “Bank of Zambia” across the top, the purity across the middle, and the face value of the coin along the bottom.

The coin is housed in a protective plastic capsule and consists of one ounce of .999 fine Silver.

Bavarian State Mint is a state-owned entity of the Free State of Bavaria. Founded in the 12th century, it is one of Germany’s oldest mints and today is one of its few official state mints.
