A Platinum Celebration of 70 Years of Marriage
“To have fallen in love completely and unreservedly makes all one’s personal troubles and even the world’s seem small and petty.” Written by Philip in 1946, these words demonstrate the strength of his love for Princess Elizabeth, which inspired him when designing her engagement ring. Diamonds from his mother’s tiara were set in platinum and The Queen still wears the ring to this day.
Platinum has a symbolic role in the royal couple’s story. This quarter-ounce platinum coin’s Proof finish emphasises every detail of two new designs created to mark their 70th wedding anniversary. Etienne Millner’s combined portrait graces the obverse, while John Bergdahl’s double shield design features the heraldic lineage of the two families that became entwined when the couple married.
A UK first – a quarter-ounce platinum coin, struck in 999.5 platinum and finished to Proof standard.
This was the only official UK coin to mark this personal celebration and was the first combined portrait of The Queen and Prince Philip on an official UK coin for ten years.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
