After nearly 80 years of selfless and dedicated service to his country, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh announced his retirement from public duties. As he stepped back from the spotlight, The Royal Mint celebrated his extraordinary contribution to public life and people's lives.
From distinguished service at sea to his wholehearted support of Her Majesty the Queen as the longest serving consort, and from the life-changing Duke of Edinburgh's Award to his leadership of hundreds of charities, Prince Philip's record of service and achievements were unparalleled. The Duke of Edinburgh also served as president of The Royal Mint over this time. Including four portraits of the queen, the committee he chaired discussed and approved the designs that were produced by the mint.
Following the announcement of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on 9th April, 2021, The Royal Mint created this beautiful memorial coins to celebrate the life and legacy of this remarkable man. The reverse portrays a portrait of Prince Philip created by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS that was personally approved by the Duke of Edinburgh, himself, in 2008. The obverse portrays the Jody Clark designed effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II along with the denomination.
