The £1 coin for 2005 is designed by Edwina Ellis and features Thomas Telford's Menai Straits Suspension Bridge.

The Menai Strait is a narrow stretch of deep, tidal water about 23km long, which separates the island of Anglesey from the Welsh mainland.

Building the Menai Bridge was an ambitious project that took nearly seven years to complete.  Consisting of the roadway that is suspended by chains hanging from two towers, when it was opened on 30th January 1826 it was the largest suspension bridge in the world.

Specifications

This one pound coin weigns 9.50 grammes, measures 22.50 millimetres in diameter and is struck to the highest Proof quality in .925 sterling silver.

The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen.  Only 15,000 silver Proof one pound coins have been authorised for worldwide distribution.

The 2005 silver proof one pound coin is encapsulated and housed in the original Royal Mint box, complete with certificate of authenticity.
