The dragon, which appears on the badge and flag of Wales, is a potent expression of the strength, fire and spirit of the national character and its depiction on the reverse of the one pound coin embodies centuries of Welsh symbolism.  With wings elevated, it has been modelled by Norman Sillman from a drawing provided by the College of Arms.

Like the previous one pound coins for Wales, the 2000 coin carries the edge inscription PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD taken from the Welsh national anthem and meaning "true am I to my country".  The obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty the Queen.

Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks.  They are closely associated with France where from the twelfth century they were issued by Kings as presentation pieces.
