In 2006, The Royal Mint issued not one, but two new £2 coins to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel - one of the greatest engineers ever to have lived.  

Isambard Kingdom Brunel is arguably Britain's greatest engineer and during a career that spanned more than thirty years he used his amazing inventiveness and considerable talent in a multitude of engineering fields.

Born on 9th April 1806, Brunel was the only son of the prominent engineer Marc Isambard Brunel.  After being educated at Hove, near Brighton, he studied for two years at the College Henri Quatre, in Paris, returning to England in 1823 where he worked with his father on the building of the Thames Tunnel.
