This beautifully designed 5 Yuan coin was issued by the government of the People's Republic of China.

This coin commemorates Kublai Khan, the Mongol founder of China's Yuan dynasty who was one of the great rulers of history.  Born in Beijing in 1215, he was the grandson of Genghis Khan but proved to be a more humane ruler than his famous predecessor.  After conflict with this brother Mengu, Kublai became undisputed ruler of China from 1259.  He administered an empire extending from the River Danube to the East China Sea.  He opened trade and communications with Europe: the Venetian merchant Marco Polo being one of his emissaries.  Kublai Khan, the tolerant Emperor, is depicted on this proof quality Chinese silver coin.
